    I spotted this bird in my backyard today, May 7, 2009 and came up with the same conclusion of it possibly being a Spotted Towhee by looking through my books. I live in the Country in Elbridge New York, Is it common to see this type of Bird in the New York Region? I have woods that border my property so I see a lot of unusual birds.I’d post my picture if I knew where and how.

    Very rarely. Far more likely you saw the closely related Eastern Towhee. Very similar but fewer spots.
