A Macworld Prediction

It’s about an hour to go until the keynote address so I thought I’d toss out one random prediction I haven’t heard anywhere else:

A Bluetooth Wireless Mighty Mouse

I have no particular inside information about this. It’s just such an obvious omission from the Apple product line, and it would be such an easy thing to do. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say that’s going to be either the first or the last hardware announcement today.

Am I right or wrong? We’ll know in a couple of hours. If he does announce it, I’ll probably buy one. The only reason I didn’t buy the original Mighty Mouse if that I like as few wires tethering me as possible.

I have two Bluetooth (standard) Apple mice and a UBS Mighty Mouse, and both bluetooth devices have severe problems – when moved too fast, they simply seem to lose information. I guess bluetooth’s communication characteristics, especially the latency, are the cause for this — after all, it’s been developed for different purposes.

Given that a Mighty Mouse transmits even more data, my guess is that it’s simply technically impossible right now.

My guess is not Bluetooth, but wireless USB. The specs are there, the chips are coming. And it would be less of a change to the existing USB product.
