{"id":1000102,"date":"2006-08-06T06:27:26","date_gmt":"2006-08-06T11:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/pop-culture\/2006\/08\/06\/copyright-is-a-noun-damn-it\/"},"modified":"2006-08-22T06:25:47","modified_gmt":"2006-08-22T11:25:47","slug":"copyright-is-a-noun-damn-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/pop-culture\/2006\/08\/06\/copyright-is-a-noun-damn-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Copyright is a Noun, Damn It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/08\/05\/technology\/05patent.html?ex=1312430400&#038;en=f4f3687d528f5694&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">recent article in yesterday&#8217;s New York Times<\/a> demonstrates a growing grammatical irregularity that needs to be stopped:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the complaint, the record companies contend that LimeWire\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s operators are \u00e2\u20ac\u0153actively facilitating, encouraging and enticing\u00e2\u20ac\u009d computer users to steal music by failing to block access to <em>copyright works<\/em> and building a business model that allows them to profit directly from piracy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>Copyright<\/i> is <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/copyright\">not an adjective<\/a>, damn it.<!--more-->The correct adjectival form is &#8220;copyrighted&#8221;. I first noticed this usage in British papers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.co.uk\/news\/index.cfm?NewsID=15389&#038;Page=1&#038;pagePos=2\">web sites<\/a>, and broadcasts; and I just assumed it was yet another  distinction between British and American English like &#8220;drink driving.&#8221; However lately, this improper use of the noun <i>copyright<\/i> has been showing up in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.com\/news\/2006\/07\/27\/kazaa\/index.php\">American magazines and web sites<\/a>; and now it&#8217;s in the New York Times of all places. I thought I could trust the New York Times to remain a bastion of proper American English, but apparently it too is succumbing to the onslaught of abbreviated IM slang. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had it. This must be stopped. Folks, <i>copyright<\/i> can be a noun or a verb, but it is  not an adjective. The adjective is &#8220;copyrighted&#8221;, not &#8220;copyright&#8221;.
