The gates are open, and you could probably get in at 3:00 A.M. in the morning if you wanted to. There isn&#8217;t enough light to see by until 6:45 A.M. or so, though. However, it seems to have been a very dry year. The marshes have turned into baked mud flats, and few birds were seen. <\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I had a backup plan in hand. The Donald M. Somers Water Pollution Control Plant just down the road was in a lot better shape, and a quick 30-minute spin around the big hill (probably a landfill?) turned up 18 species including this Common Moorhen:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image1000472\" src=\"http:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/commonmoorhen.JPG\" alt=\"Common Moorhen\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I think we&#8217;ll come here on Thursday instead. <!--more-->Other species seen included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Canada Goose<\/li>\n<li>Gadwall<\/li>\n<li>Mallard<\/li>\n<li>Northern Shoveler<\/li>\n<li>Green-winged Teal<\/li>\n<li>Ruddy Duck<\/li>\n<li>Pied-billed Grebe<\/li>\n<li>Great Egret<\/li>\n<li>Red-tailed Hawk<\/li>\n<li>Common Moorhen<\/li>\n<li>American Coot<\/li>\n<li>Ring-billed Gull<\/li>\n<li>American Crow<\/li>\n<li>Barn Swallow<\/li>\n<li>Marsh Wren<\/li>\n<li>Yellow-rumped Warbler<\/li>\n<li>Song Sparrow<\/li>\n<li>Red-winged Blackbird<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I headed over to Sunnyvale Baylands Park first thing this morning to see if we could get in early enough for Thursday morning&#8217;s Birding BoF.
