Normally Fall is when the rarities show up, but we&#8217;ve hit a triple this week. First there was the Blue Grosbeak Rafael Campos found in the Vale of Cashmere on Tuesday. Then Alex Wilson found a Yellow-throated Warbler on Three Sisters Island yesterday. Then last night John Ascher found the rarest bird yet, a Sora:<\/p>\n<p><img src='http:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/sora.JPG' alt='Sora rail' width='640' height='465' \/><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is the first Sora seen in Prospect Park in about 12 years, though they&#8217;re a little more regular at Jamaica Bay. I got out bright and early to see it this morning shortly after dawn. For such a striking bird, it blends into the phragmites very well. Fortunately John had returned  and was able to point out the bird to me. <\/p>\n<p>I also got this QuickTime <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafeaulait.org\/birds\/sora.mov\">video<\/a> of the bird walking around, though it&#8217;s roughly of the same quality as the famous Bigfoot or Ivory-billed Woodpecker films. (Warning: may crash some browsers.) <\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/noVI4zEIOHE\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/noVI4zEIOHE\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Total species count form about 6:30 A.M. to 9:15 A.M. was 39:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pied-billed Grebe (3 Prospect Lake)<\/li>\n<li>Double-crested Cormorant<\/li>\n<li>Great Blue Heron<\/li>\n<li>Great Egret<\/li>\n<li>Black-crowned Night-Heron<\/li>\n<li>Canada Goose<\/li>\n<li>Brant (~170 flyover)<\/li>\n<li>Mute Swan<\/li>\n<li>Mallard<\/li>\n<li>Ring-necked Duck (1 M, 1 F, Upper Pool)<\/li>\n<li>Ruddy Duck<\/li>\n<li>Red-tailed Hawk<\/li>\n<li>American Coot<\/li>\n<li>Ring-billed Gull<\/li>\n<li>Herring Gull<\/li>\n<li>Rock Pigeon<\/li>\n<li>Mourning Dove<\/li>\n<li>Red-bellied Woodpecker<\/li>\n<li>Downy Woodpecker<\/li>\n<li>Northern Flicker<\/li>\n<li>Eastern Phoebe<\/li>\n<li>Blue Jay<\/li>\n<li>Carolina Wren<\/li>\n<li>American Robin<\/li>\n<li>European Starling<\/li>\n<li>Chipping Sparrow<\/li>\n<li>Fox Sparrow<\/li>\n<li>Song Sparrow<\/li>\n<li>Swamp Sparrow (Peninsula forest)<\/li>\n<li>White-throated Sparrow<\/li>\n<li>Dark-eyed Junco<\/li>\n<li>Northern Cardinal<\/li>\n<li>Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Vale of Cashmere)<\/li>\n<li>Blue Grosbeak (Vale of Cashmere)<\/li>\n<li>Red-winged Blackbird<\/li>\n<li>Common Grackle<\/li>\n<li>Brown-headed Cowbird<\/li>\n<li>House Sparrow<\/li>\n<li>Sora<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, although I did not see these next two myself today, Phil Payne relocated the Yellow-throated Warbler, and Orrin Tilevitz found the first White-crowned Sparrow of the year for the park.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Migration&#8217;s getting weird.
