I still have to take it out in the field, but despite the lack of image stabilization it&#8217;s possibly the sharpest lens I&#8217;ve tried:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars.jpg\" alt=\"5 dollars\" title=\"5 dollars\" width=\"638\" height=\"424\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1002923\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars.jpg 638w, https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is handheld with flash but no tripod and wide open!<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The lens is also surprisingly light. However the minimum focus distance is quite long: 3.5m. <\/p>\n<p>The 300mm + 1.4x teleconverter didn&#8217;t do nearly as good a job, even on a tripod:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-teleconverted.jpg\" alt=\"5 dollar bill\" title=\"5 dollars teleconverted\" width=\"542\" height=\"363\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1002929\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-teleconverted.jpg 542w, https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-teleconverted-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 300mm with no  teleconverter was close to as sharp, but the lack of magnification effectively lost the benefit of that:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-300mm.jpg\" alt=\"left lower corner of a 5 dollar bill\" title=\"5 dollars 300mm\" width=\"432\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1002931\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-300mm.jpg 432w, https:\/\/www.elharo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/5-dollars-300mm-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t try this test when I had the 100-400mm lens out. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Got a Canon 400mm f\/5.6L from UPS today.
