WAMU: $25 Checks for Life

Just a quick note that Washington Mutual’s advertised “free checks for life” is a lie. After opening an account with them, they did indeed send me some free checks. However the checks they sent were incorrect and not what I ordered. When I attempted to replace them, they wanted to charge me $25 (more than I would pay through a 3rd party printer) and flatly refused to honor their promise of free checks for life.

If they lie about something this trivial, what else are they lying about? If they can’t even get a basic check order right, do I really want to trust them with my money?

On top of that, WAMU doesn’t support Quicken for the Mac (again, despite telling me they did). Time to look for a new bank.

Actually, they should be free for life. Not sure what conversation you had with them, but if the checks were misprinted, you shouldn’t have a problem requesting a reorder. In fact, you can go online to the website and order them yourself, which will allow you to verify that what gets printed is what you want. Keep in mind that the free checks for life pertain to standard single wallet checks with the WaMu design. If you prefer a design or duplicates, there will be a charge. Good luck!

I had to click on this — I was curious what the (Washington, D.C. area) radio station WAMU had to do with $25 checks :-)

Well did you call them, go online, or walk into a branch and talk to them? I wouldn’t judge an entire company based on your one experience. I myself have a checking account with them and have never had to pay for checks.

Perhaps you should go into the branch you opened the account and talk to a teller, or maybe a supervisor or manager. I’m sure they can straighten the situation up for you. I’ve found the company to have excellent customer service.

If we all held every company to your standard, there isn’t one in existence that would pass as a trust worthy company.
